One of my favorite quotes related to teaching is by Socrates: “The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.” It keeps me grounded in two ways. First, it reminds me that teaching should always involve the “search” for knowledge. This may come from a professional development source, colleague or student. Second, it keeps me on guard for new ways to engage students—bringing a fresh perspective on something I may have taught for years.
I have worked in the Kyrene School District teaching 4th, 5th and 6th grade for nine years. Three years ago I achieved Natioanl Board Certification as a Middle Childhood Generalist, and the biggest “take away” from the process was “reflection” in my teaching. I found myself having more questions than answers, which was intimidating and yet empowering at the same time. I am in the process of completing my Ph.D. at Arizona State University. My focus is on understanding assessment practices as it relates to student capital.
